SBS DRIVETEC // BURGER NEWS 2018 Hello from Canada! One of my favorite conversations to have is when someone asks who I work for. The moment I say I work for a “Burger Group” company, I immediately get a glare of confusion. It never fails to make me laugh because I know they’re thinking I must work for some sort of Food Company, making the world’s best hamburgers! Without too much delay, I explain who the Burger Group is and what our facility in Canada does. I ALWAYS start by explaining that the Burger Group was the first manufacturer of the mechani- cal cuckoo clock, beginning over 160 years ago in the Black Forest, Germany. This has always fascinated me and evidently, fascinates those I explain this to! When I’m escorting guests through our facility in Barrie, Ontario, I enjoy explaining the 4 photographs by Sebastian Wehrle we have in our front foyer. I typically point out the one with the cuckoo clock carrier on the back of the woman in long blonde dreadlocks and a smoke pipe in hand. It’s truly amazing how one picture can tell an entire story and evidently, one that encompasses the foundation of Burger Group. p Since my first day with the company, I’ve experienced a piece of history on a daily basis. The moment you step in to our facility, you see photographs of Black Forest history; when you turn the corner you see the name of our boardroom, “Rolf Burger Boardroom”, a r someone who worked tirelessly to allow the momentum of Burger Group to progress. Just looking at the building from the outside (and inside!) makes you feel like you’re in a different part of the o r r e world; often receiving comments about how beautiful this building is compared to what most manufacturing facilities in Canada look like. I recently went over the Burger Group History book that was just released with a German co-worker of mine. She explained with great enthusiasm, the amount of history behind every pic- ture, every Burger family member and all the buildings in Scho- nach that still stand to this day. I can honestly say, it was one of my favorite days this summer, drinking a glass of wine under the evening sun, listening to her explain with such passion and pride, the roots of her story with the company. c I have never worked for a company that has had this much histo- ry and continues to base their values and core principles on the same direction created over 100 years ago. In comparison to my previous employers, Burger Group stands out because of its history, traditions, values, core principles and the sense of family. I take pride in who I work for and what I do for the company. I no longer come to work and think that my efforts aren’t going anywhere or that the company I work for is only out for the dol- lars and cents (or Euro’s!) and that I’m just a number amongst many others. I’ve never felt that way here; I feel I belong to a n io v a ar p L I A M R I A o e r e o a e r r o c worldwide family, involved in creating more history and successes. I started with the company in March 2017 as employee number 2. I’ve had the privilege of selecting and contributing to the growth of our team which currently stands at 10 people consisting of both locals and a few that have come from Germany. Because the company initiated ultramodern equipment, technologies and systems, we required the expertise of employees from Head Of- fice to support us in the implementation stages. Having these employees from Germany come to Canada has been a wonderful contribution to allow for the integration of the Burger Spirit in to SBS DRIVETEC Inc. Similar to most global companies, a language barrier is a challenge that employees face when communicating with people across the pond. However, because of the emplo- yees that have come to Canada, we are able to transcribe and translate documentation, records and dialect with ease. Not to say that everything has been a breeze up to this point, because it has not. As a team, we have recognized that hard work and dedication is required to successfully grow this company. In or- der to achieve this, we all wear different hats; no one is shy to start up the floor cleaner when things get messy; emptying the staff kitchen dishwasher is never done by the same person. The entire team has built up a comradery where the mindset is “We’re in this together”, putting in the efforts required to get a job done regardless of whether it is in our job description. We all want to v i o learn new things, develop our skills and achieve something great, all while feeling a sense of belonging and appreciation. I believe o a this is what the Burger Spirit is about; regardless of the job title we hold, we all have the same goal of achieving success for the company and success within ourselves. e r e n a A I R M A I L o One day, I hope SBS DRIVETEC Inc. is able to support the local community as much as SBS does in Schonach. I wish to see a student or “Azubis” program at our facility; training new students on state-of-the-art technologies and equipment – possibly even a sheep farm? Since we’re in Canada, it might have to be a Moose Farm! What I really wanted to share with you in this article is the fact that I’m proud of who I work for. I’m proud of the company I represent in my work; the people I work with and why we do what we do. And, for the record, I do make a GREAT hamburger! If you ever come across the pond to Canada, I’ll be sure to Barbeque one up for you! y o u r s , D a w n TEXT: Dawn Murphy ÜBERSETZUNG AUF DER NÄCHSTEN SEITE 21
